Media reports state on 30 April 2013 that former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has been 'arbitrarily detained' in her home country with a number of her rights violated, argued the European Court of Human Rights, as it condemned her imprisonment. Tymoshenko, 52, an arch-rival of President Viktor Yanukovych, was jailed in 2011 on charges of abuse of power related to a gas deal she signed with Russia when she was premier. She argued her detention was politically motivated and unlawful and complained she was being denied access to adequate medical care for a back complaint.
