Amazon has announced a €1 billion investment in Belgium between 2025 and 2027 – the company’s largest large-scale project in the country to date. In a release, the company indicated that the funds will be used to develop logistics infrastructure, deepen cooperation with Belgian postal operator Bpost and support local SMEs.
Amazon’s main aim is to build a more resilient and faster supply chain, enabling same-day delivery for Belgian customers. So far, Amazon has rolled out Same-Day Delivery in other European countries – it now covers more than 135 cities and further expansions are announced.
The company already employs around 400 people in Belgium and has invested around €800 million there over the past decade. The rationale for the announcement of this investment came, among others, during Belgium’s economic mission to California, and Amazon says the project is intended to support both technological development and the local economy.
The extended cooperation with Bpost is no coincidence – the operator has been increasing courier volumes and developing innovations in recent years, including a parcel system and packageless services. Amazon is making it clear that it will not fulfil the ambitious same-day plans with its own forces alone – cooperation along the entire delivery route will be needed.
While the project appears to be a natural step in Europe’s omni-channel logistics strategy, questions remain about the operational challenges – from the cost of keeping stock close to customers to managing the last-mile network. For local SMEs and Belgian courier services, this means potential opportunities, but also competitive pressure in speed and pricing.
