A home IT lab: a hobby that feeds back into the business as a skill

With 63 percent of employers citing a skills shortage as the main barrier to transformation, and 48 percent of European organizations reporting a shortage of cybersecurity personnel, the home IT lab is becoming increasingly important as a private environment for developing the skills that companies are unable to acquire quickly enough on the market.

Not so long ago, a home IT lab was associated with a cupboard full of second-hand servers, a tangle of cables and a hobby for the most dedicated system administrators. Today, it can fit onto a mini-computer, a laptop or within a few virtual machines. Its role has also changed. Increasingly, the home lab is a place where specialists acquire the skills they will later need in companies.

This is particularly important in an era of rapid technological change. The World Economic Forum estimates that by 2030, 39 per cent of employees’ current skills will have been transformed or rendered obsolete. If the global workforce consisted of a hundred people, 59 of them would require retraining. The importance of AI, data, networking, cybersecurity and general technological proficiency is growing the fastest.

Small-scale infrastructure, real-world challenges

In a home environment, you can deploy containers, configure networks, automate infrastructure, test backups, collect logs, build a monitoring system or run local AI models. However, the hardware isn’t the most important thing. The real value lies in the full workflow: designing a solution, deploying it, dealing with a failure, diagnosing the issue, restoring operation and documenting the lessons learnt.

It is difficult to gain such experience simply by watching a course. A homelab teaches you the consequences of architectural decisions. A poorly configured DNS stops working. A lack of resource limits blocks other services. An untested backup turns out to be useless. Even on a small scale, these are problems reminiscent of situations encountered in a production environment.

Self-directed learning is not a niche market. In a 2025 Stack Overflow survey, 69 per cent of respondents stated that they had learnt a new programming technique or language in the previous twelve months. Technical documentation remained the most popular source of knowledge.

Why this should matter to CIOs

A 2026 European report by the Linux Foundation indicates that 48 per cent of organisations surveyed are facing a shortage of cybersecurity staff. The most common response to skills gaps is to develop in-house teams, a strategy chosen by 63 per cent of organisations. In a global survey, 57 per cent of companies reported shortcomings in the areas of AI security, risk management and AI system monitoring.

A home lab can shorten the path from theoretical knowledge to independent practice. An employee who has previously configured Kubernetes, network segmentation or monitoring does not automatically become a production expert. However, they understand the basic mechanisms, are able to ask better questions and recognise the effects of misconfiguration more quickly.

There is also a financial aspect to this. In a 2026 Flexery report, 85 per cent of organisations identified cloud cost management as their main challenge, whilst 82 per cent cited security. The estimated proportion of unused cloud expenditure has risen to 29 per cent, partly due to the growth in AI workloads. A small environment will not replicate the economics of a large cloud, but it can teach you how to measure resource usage, disable unnecessary services and treat cost as part of the architecture.

From project to market value

Home Assistant is a good example. The project began in 2013 as a private ‘playground’ for experimenting with Python and home automation. Over time, it evolved into an open-source platform used in millions of households, developed by a global community.

Hack The Box has followed a similar path. The idea of building vulnerable machines for learning penetration testing grew out of experimentation and a community-based learning model. The platform now reports over 4.3 million users and has trained teams in more than 1,500 organisations. These are not just stories of entrepreneurship. They demonstrate that practices initially carried out outside a company can give rise to methods, tools and skills that are later acquired by businesses.

Recruitment is also changing. According to LinkedIn data, companies that most frequently use skills-based candidate search were 12 per cent more likely to make a high-quality hire. A code repository, an architecture description, an automated deployment process or an incident analysis can therefore reveal more about a candidate than simply the list of technologies on their CV.

An experiment, not a substitute for production

A home lab does not replicate the scale, regulatory requirements, teamwork or responsibility for customer data found in a professional setting. It can also reinforce bad habits: manual configurations, a lack of updates or neglecting access controls. Nor should it be an informal condition of employment. Not everyone has the time, space or money to pursue a technological hobby.

A mature company, however, can utilise this model by providing secure test environments, training budgets and time for experimentation. The CIO should assess not the number of devices in an employee’s home, but the quality of their thinking: the reproducibility of the solution, security, cost control, documentation and the ability to learn from failures.

A home lab is therefore not so much a collection of equipment as a way of learning. In an economy demanding rapid AI deployment, cloud cost control and greater digital resilience, such a practice can be a useful source of expertise for companies. Provided, that is, that the hobby is treated as an indication of potential, rather than a substitute for professional experience.
