The Pentagon has signed a contract with Oracle worth up to $6.99 billion over ten years. The contract covers a five-year base period worth $3.31 billion, with an option to extend it for a further five years. The US Coast Guard and intelligence services will also benefit from it.
However, this does not mean that Oracle will immediately receive $7 billion in new funding. The Pentagon is consolidating several existing contracts relating to licences, technical support, cloud services and consultancy into a single contract. According to the department, centralising procurement is expected to save taxpayers at least $441 million.
This marks the next stage in streamlining military spending on technology. In May, the Pentagon signed a similar contract, worth $9.7 billion, covering Microsoft products and services. The administration hopes this will reduce instances where individual units purchase the same solutions separately and under different terms.
For Oracle, the contract means stable, long-term revenue and a stronger position in the defence sector. This is significant at a time when the company is investing heavily in data centres and infrastructure for artificial intelligence. In the 2026 financial year, Oracle secured $43 billion in debt financing to develop these projects.
Centralisation can simplify licence management, improve system interoperability and mitigate some cyber threats. At the same time, it increases the Pentagon’s dependence on a single supplier. In the longer term, therefore, monitoring the actual use of the software, maintaining competition and ensuring the ability to migrate data and systems to other environments will be crucial.
