Meta is expanding its generative AI portfolio with its own image-generation model. The company has announced Muse Image, the first solution of its kind developed by the Meta Superintelligence Labs team, which is set to enhance the capabilities of Meta AI and gradually be rolled out across the group’s key applications.

Muse Image has been integrated with the Meta AI chatbot and is capable of interpreting complex text prompts, using photos as input, and editing generated images based on users’ sketches and annotations. The model is set to power over 30 new AI effects in Instagram Stories, as well as enable the creation of graphics directly within conversations with Meta AI on WhatsApp. Initially, these features will be available in selected countries, and will subsequently be rolled out to Facebook and Messenger.

Basic use of Muse Image will remain free. However, Meta has announced that more advanced image-generation capabilities will be part of paid subscription plans.

The launch is part of the company’s broader strategy, as it has been investing heavily in the development of its own AI models for over a year. In April, Meta unveiled Muse Spark, the first language-understanding model developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs. It is now expanding its family of models to include image generation, whilst also announcing the first version of Muse Video, a tool for creating video content.

The new models are intended to help Meta close the gap on OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, which have been developing their own image and video generation systems for months. The difference, however, lies in how the technology is utilised. Meta is focusing primarily on integrating AI into the services used by billions of users every day, rather than offering separate tools for professionals.

From a business perspective, this means that generative AI is becoming another native feature of the largest social media platforms. For users, this will be a more convenient way to create content, whilst for Meta it represents another step towards building a paid ecosystem of AI services and increasing engagement within its apps.
