Artificial intelligence in Polish diagnostic imaging is moving from the stage of local implementations to a centralised healthcare infrastructure.
A consortium comprising Synektik and the Czech company Carebot has signed a contract with the e-Health Centre for the supply, implementation and maintenance of AI models to support the detection of breast cancer lesions in mammograms. The maximum value of the contract is PLN 10.97 million net, and its implementation is due to be completed by 20 September 2026. The warranty for the delivered models will last for five years.
The algorithms will analyse medical images in the DICOM standard, and the results will be fed into the Intelligent Services Platform currently under development. The PUI is intended to act as a digital assistant to radiologists and, ultimately, to also support the diagnosis of lung cancer, strokes, fractures and pathologies visible on chest X-rays.
The contract is part of a broader shift in how AI is implemented in healthcare. Rather than individual hospitals purchasing separate applications, the state is building a shared platform into which certified models will be integrated. This may facilitate the scaling of the technology and reduce the problem of fragmented systems, but at the same time it increases the importance of interoperability, data quality and the maintenance of solutions once funding from the National Reconstruction Plan (KPO) has ended.
In early August, Carebot announced that it had obtained certification in accordance with the EU’s Medical Device Regulation (MDR) for its AI solution for mammography. The system is designed to flag suspicious lesions and assist in the assessment of examinations, whilst leaving the final interpretation to the doctor.
For Synektika, the contract also marks a deeper entry into the segment of central digital services for healthcare. In the first half of the current financial year, the company increased its revenue by 35 per cent, to PLN 441.2 million.
