Synology has launched the DS225+, a new dual-drive NAS server that replaces the popular DS220+. The device is aimed at advanced home users, small offices and small development teams. The key new feature is a 2.5GbE network port, which addresses the biggest limitation of its predecessor, but the technical specification indicates an evolution rather than a breakthrough.
At the heart of the device is an Intel Celeron N4505 processor, a dual-core unit that, combined with 2GB of DDR4 RAM (non-expandable), is expected to ensure smooth operation of the DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system. Although a step up from the previous generation, the lack of memory expansion options may be a limitation for users planning to run multiple applications simultaneously, such as in Docker containers.
The DS225+ offers space for two drives, allowing up to 40TB of raw capacity using 20TB media. As with other models in the series, Synology recommends the use of drives from its own compatibility list to ensure maximum reliability. In terms of connectivity, in addition to the aforementioned 2.5GbE port, users also get a standard 1GbE port, which can be used for redundancy or connecting to a separate network.
The strength of the device remains the software ecosystem. The Synology Drive package allows the creation of a private cloud for syncing and accessing files from anywhere, providing an alternative to public services. Active Backup Suite, on the other hand, enables centralised backups from workstations (Windows, macOS, Linux), virtual machines and cloud accounts. This is complemented by Surveillance Station software, transforming the NAS into a video surveillance recorder.
The DS225+ is now available from Synology partners and distributors. The device is a solid evolutionary proposition for its target audience, but customers looking for higher performance or greater flexibility in terms of RAM expansion will need to turn their attention to higher models in the manufacturer’s portfolio.
